Playsafe Mulch is a graded, cream coloured wood chip certified as Softfall mulch, suitable for use under playground equipment when laid at the correct depth. For softfall/playground use, a minimum depth of 300mm is required,  this is not the same depth as a standard garden mulch. It's equally at home in garden beds at a standard 50-100mm depth, where it suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and improves soil health. Available in bags or by the cubic metre for pickup and delivery across Melbourne, Geelong, Mornington Peninsular and the Surf Coast.

Yes, Playsafe Mulch is certified as Softfall mulch, suitable for use under play equipment when laid at the correct depth.

Playsafe mulch should last 1-2 years before needing a top up. However in busy playgrounds, Playsafe should be topped up when it the thickness starts to drop below 300mm to ensure safety. 

A minimum depth of 300mm is required for softfall/playground use. This is significantly deeper than a standard garden mulch application, so it's worth calculating your quantity carefully before ordering.

Yes, outside of playground applications, Playsafe Mulch works as a standard garden mulch at the usual 50-100mm depth, offering weed suppression, moisture retention, and soil health benefits.

For playground / softfall use:

  1. Prepare the area: Clear the area of debris and ensure a stable, even base.
  2. Apply at the certified depth: Lay to a minimum depth of 300mm, this is a safety requirement, not a guideline, and should not be reduced.
  3. Maintain depth over time: Check and top up depth periodically, as softfall mulch compacts and displaces with use.

For garden bed use:

  1. Prepare the area: Clear existing weeds and debris. Lay a weed mat first for maximum suppression
  2. Apply at the right depth: Spread to 50-100mm for standard garden mulching.
  3. Keep clear of plant stems: Leave a gap between mulch and stems or trunks to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Natural Weathering: As a naturally sourced wood chip, colour and shape will weather gradually outdoors over time.
  • Product Variation: Because this range is naturally sourced or recycled, some variation from what's shown online is normal, visiting in store gives the truest impression of current stock.
  • Topping Up: For garden beds, a light rake or top-up keeps the surface looking fresh. For playground areas, maintaining the certified 300mm depth matters more than surface appearance.
  • Wear gloves when handling the mulch.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin, and prevent inhalation of dust and vapours.
  • Store away from open flames.
  • Keep dry before and after installation.
