Mossrock Fine Mulch is a golden-brown wood chip mulch made from recycled wood waste sourced from manufacturers' packaging, then mulched and screened to approximately 12mm. Despite the name, it is a wood mulch rather than a stone or rock product, and its fine, even grade gives garden beds a clean, decorative golden-brown finish. It is commonly used to control weed growth by blocking light to the soil surface, to add an attractive finish to garden beds, and to help conserve water by reducing evaporation from the soil. As a recycled wood product, it also adds organic matter to the soil as it slowly breaks down, supporting healthier beds over time. Sold in bulk, it is well suited to larger beds and landscaping projects where consistent coverage matters. Please note this product is only available at our Torquay store. Available by the cubic metre for pickup or delivery across Melbourne and Geelong.

No, despite the name, Moss Rock is a golden-brown wood chip mulch, not a stone or rock product.

It's a golden-brown wood chip with an irregular, mixed texture, similar in style to other wood chip mulches but on a finer, 12mm screened size.

It's commonly used to control weed growth, add a decorative finish to garden beds, and help conserve water by reducing soil evaporation.

For optimal performance and appearance, moss rock should be freshened up with a top layer every 1-3 years.

  1. Prepare the area: Clear existing weeds and debris. Lay a weed mat first for maximum suppression.
  2. Apply at the right depth: Spread to 50–100 mm. Too thin and weeds can break through; too thick restricts water penetration.
  3. Keep clear of plant stems: Leave a 50 mm gap between mulch and plant stems or tree trunks to prevent moisture build up.
  4. Water it in. Give the area a good drink after mulching to settle the layer and start pushing moisture down to the roots.
  • Natural Weathering: As an undyed wood chip, Moss Rock will gradually weather and grey slightly with sun exposure over time, rather than fading from a colour.
  • Keeping it Looking Fresh: A light rake or turn brings the richer underlying colour back to the surface.
  • Even Coverage: Topping up thin or patchy spots keeps garden beds looking full and consistent.
  • Product Variation: Being a recycled material, some natural variation in colour and chip size is expected batch to batch.
  • Wear gloves when handling the mulch.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin, and prevent inhalation of dust and vapours.
  • Store away from open flames.
  • Keep dry before and after installation.
