Yes, our Black Wood mulch is dyed with a vegetable-based colourant, not synthetic chemical dyes. It is non-toxic, safe for use around children and pets, and does not harm soil biology or plant roots when applied correctly. 

Neither is objectively better, it comes down to your garden's aesthetic. Black Wood mulch suits contemporary, native, and minimalist garden styles, creating a striking contrast against green foliage and light-coloured stones. Red wood mulch creates a warmer, bolder look and is popular in traditional and cottage-style gardens. Both provide identical weed suppression, moisture retention, and soil enrichment benefits. 

Any organic mulch can potentially attract termites if applied directly against building foundations. To minimise risk, maintain a clear gap of at least 150mm between mulch and any structure, and avoid excessive depth near walls or posts. 

Yes. Our Black Wood mulch uses a vegetable-based dye that is non-toxic and safe around children and dogs. As with any mulch, we recommend washing hands after handling and keeping it away from edible plants. 

To keep your garden looking fresh, topping up and re-mulching Black Wood is recommended every 1-2 years. 

There are approximately 25 bags in a cubic meter. 

  • Weed Control: A 50–100 mm layer of black mulch blocks sunlight from weed seeds, significantly reducing unwanted growth and saving hours of maintenance. Pair with a weed mat for maximum suppression.
  • Moisture Retention: Mulch acts as an insulating blanket for soil, slowing evaporation and reducing watering frequency, especially valuable during Melbourne's dry summers.

For best results, apply bulk black wood mulch at a depth of 50–100 mm. Follow these steps:

  1. Prepare the area: Clear existing weeds and debris. Lay a weed mat first for maximum suppression.
  2. Apply at the right depth: Spread to 50–100 mm. Too thin and weeds can break through; too thick restricts water penetration.
  3. Allow colour to set: Avoid watering for 3–4 days after installation to allow the vegetable dye to bond firmly.
  4. Keep clear of plant stems: Leave a 50 mm gap between mulch and plant stems or tree trunks to prevent moisture buildup.

Spring Wash: After the first heavy rain, some dye may temporarily wash from the surface; this is a normal process called “Spring Wash.” The colour settles deeper into the mulch over time. To restore appearance, turn the mulch once the rain stops, or cover with a tarp before storms.

Colour Setting: Allow black mulch to remain dry for 3–4 days after installation to ensure the colour sets properly. Once bonded, the dye is stable and long-lasting.

How long does black mulch stay black? Once set, our vegetable dye resists fading for an extended period. As with all organic mulch dyes, UV exposure will gradually lighten the colour; a light top-up or turn of the mulch each season keeps it looking fresh.


  • Wear gloves when handling the mulch.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin, and prevent inhalation of dust and vapours.
  • Store away from open flames.
  • Keep dry before and after installation.
